   Custom Zone Chat Font Colors

This is information is provided by Dale aka Cyberdad.

Background

The zone allows you to select font colors from a limited number of values contained in a color pallet in the chat options for any game room.  In reality the zone's chat client will allow you to select any color within limits.  Some of the lighter colors are not allowed by the zone as they would be too light to be visible (try selecting white, cyan or the yellow from the zone's color pallet and they will default to black).  Some values are not legitimate in the windows registry as leading zeros are truncated thus are not permitted.  Other than that the sky is the limit.

There are third party programs on various sites that will allow you to select colors and use them but in using a program from an unknown source you risk viruses and the programmer making changes to the registry other than the ones they state you are making.  Rather than risk your system by using a third party program you can manually change the stored value for the font color in the registry entry used by the zone to save your preferences.

To make this easier for those not experienced with editing their registry a small patch file can be used.  You can see what entries are being changed for yourself this way and satisfy your self that the only value changed is that of the chat font color.  This patch is safe and easy to use ... enjoy

Instructions:

This reg file is the only key that is required to be changed and the default value is set for black.  Click and Save colors.reg

  1. Save the file to a convenient location

  2. right click the file and select edit from the context menu

  3. Change the hex number to the color you want to use*

  4. Save the file with the new value

  5. Double click the file to update the chat color

  6. enter or close then re-enter the chat rooms

 Notes:

* The value of the font color is saved as a hexadecimal value for red-blue-green entered backwards (green-blue-red) . These values can be found on numerous sites with color tables for HTML web pages.  Examples are:

 1) If you open the zone font selections and click ok the color will default back to black.  To reset your color after changing font size or style you need to re-open your saved registry key and re-enter the chat room.

2) If you pick too light a color or one which is outside of the range the zone can use it will default back to black

3) hex numbers for colors you use should not end with 00 or h0 (where h is any hex number from 1-F) because when entered backwards the leading zeros will be truncated in the registry change any number ending in 00 to 01 to get a color almost identical to that pictured.

4) To change colors rapidly create several copies of the basic registry file and edit them to display the colors you like.  To change from one to the next you simply double click the file going from one room to another or when you change names and in less than one second you have a chat color.  Just rename the reg file so you know which one is for each color.
